Owen storms to championship top three
AJ OWEN has just signed off his best season in the Classic Challenge.
The Wycombe driver won his first three races to lead the championship and after some tuition from Jack Goff at Silverstone he continued that rich vein of form.
Another class win came in race one at Pembrey but after spinning out at the final corner of race two, disaster struck again at Mallory Park when turbo failure on lap one of race one ended his weekend early.
However, the Owen family rallied round to get the car ready for Snetterton and they were rewarded with third overall and another class victory in race one.
More turbo failure ruled him out of race two, but Owen was back for Croft and despite driving the circuit for the first time he put together probably his best ever race to register yet another class win.
He backed that up in race two before heading to Silverstone for the championship finale.
Electrical problems ended his championship chances in race one, but Owen came from dead last on the grid in the final race of the season to come home fourth and secure third in the championship overall.
He said: “ To win the first three races of the season and to lead the championship for part of the season was great.
“We had a great record of class wins and if someone had said to me at the start of the season that I would win three races overall, lead the championship for part of the season, be Class C Champion and finish in the top three of the championship I would have laughed and never believed it would happen.”
