Wycombe target Shield silverware
HIGH Wycombe RUFC have nailed their colours firmly to the mast by targeting the Bucks Shield this season.
On Saturday they swept past Olney 38-26 to reach the semi-finals and manager Richard Burrage says lifting the trophy could be the making of his young team.
He said: “This competition is very important to us.
“We’re up for the challenge this season and want to show that we’ve got the young players capable of winning silverware.
“It’s rejuvenating for the club to see so many young players coming through.
“The majority of the players are between 18 and 26 while in previous years it’s been late 20s to mid 30s.”
Ian Isham, Callum Lyles, Matt Wardle, Joe Openshaw, George Yeates and Andy Van Zyl scored the tries that saw them overcome Olney at Kingsmead last weekend, joining Beaconsfield, Bletchley and Milton Keynes in the last four.
Burrage said: “The game was a great improvement on the last few weeks and showed that the lads are starting to work well together.
“The work they’ve been doing is starting to show on the field and the commitment from the players is very good.
“We don’t mind who we get in the next round now.”
