Wanderers: No gambling culture here
GAMBLING in football has caught the headlines this week, but Wycombe Wanderers are not embroiled in the culture.
Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth says his players are not effected by over-the-top betting and if they were he would intervene immediately.
He said: “At this level I wouldn’t say it was a big problem.
“There has always been the gambling culture because of all the spare time players have got and a lot of footballers have addictive personalities.
“It’s needs addressing because it can spiral out of control and hopefully the PFA and The FA will be right on top of this.”
It’s been reported that some players have taken out payday loans to meet debts after the addiction has taken hold of them.
Ainsworth said: “If there is a fiver on a game of cards you let it go, but if it ever got out of control I’d know about it.
“In my career I’ve seen huge amounts of money on card tables, but that’s going right back to the early days.
“But I keep a keen eye on my guys and if anything did happen I’d address it straightaway.
“I’m the biggest gambler here with my team selection every Saturday.”
