WANDERERS boss Gareth Ainsworth has called for professional referees to be introduced into all four divisions of the Football League after a potentially matchwinning goal was disallowed against Swindon Town.

A linesman's flag penalised Josh Scowen for being offside in the build-up to Max Kretzschmar scoring with five minutes left, although Scowen didn't touch the ball.

Ainsworth said video replays showed Scowen was onside in any case and the goal - which could have put Wanderers into the area semi finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy - should have stood.

And after seeing his side concede a last minute equaliser at Accrington after the officials missed a handball from Kayode Odejayi in the build-up, Ainsworth believes it's time to introduce professional referees into the Football League's lower tiers.

He said: "We have four professional leagues in this country and only one has got professional referees. The Championship has games worth £50million in there. I know the professional referees do do those games but not the games leading up to it in the season.

"I believe we have to make careers for these guys and they should be accountable for mistakes in their job, rather than being part time and having another job on a Saturday.

"I couldn't do my job part time and I think referees' and assistant referees' jobs are just as important as my job.

"You have to look at referees and think how can we make this better, and I think if they could have a lot more professional referees it would help football a lot more in general. I know it's tough with money constraints, and this is probably a fantasist's view, but that's how I'd love it to be.

"I'm still not certain they would get everything right but maybe some of the major decisions could improve.

"I know they have a tough job but is there a way we can make it easier for them to get decisions better? Making everything professional would be great for referees.

"I'm a League Two manager so whether this falls on deaf ears we'll see, but that's my opinion."

Ainsworth was fuming in the immediate aftermath of Kretzschmar's disallowed goal and watching it again had done nothing to improve his mood.

He said: "Watching the video backed it up. Josh Scowen was adjudged to be in an offside position interfering with play and that's the reason they gave us.

"If he is interfering with play it doesn't matter because he's clearly onside. In my opinion - I have to keep saying this - it's the wrong decision.

"They have cost us dearly lately. It's taken a couple of, in my opinion, wrong decisions to make me feel like this and have a really good think about this."
