WYCOMBE District Swimming Club have just returned from Tenerife where a squad of 40 of their top swimmers were put through their paces in a one-week warm-weather training camp.

Head coach Kevin Brooks said: “It was a chance to get away and focus on nothing but swimming for a week. It’s a really positive experience for all of them, not just swimming wise.

“You don’t immediately notice the step up, but it’s about laying the foundations and if you get the grounding in it really benefits.”

The swimmers had two two-hour sessions each day, with land training thrown in as well, while among the advantages available in Tenerife was access to a flume.

A flume is a 5mx3m pool with a current that can be set at different speeds for the swimmers to swim against.

Brooks describes it as an 'endless pool' and says it gives coaches an opportunity to film swimmers from all angles.

Brooks said: "There are two tests, one at 80 per cent and one at 100 per cent, so you can see what strokes break down at race speed.

"Forty swimmers had the chance to do this so it was really helpful. Not many coaches get the opportunity to do it properly."
