MIND games came to Matt Ingram's aid as he made the first penalty save of his Wanderers career.

The High Wycombe-born keeper got under the skin of experienced former Republic of Ireland international David Connolly, who fluffed his lines from the spot and allowed Ingram to save.

The Blues keeper pointed to his right before the kick was taken to keep Connolly guessing as to which way he was going to dive.

It's a tactic that's worked for Ingram in the past, as he saved a penalty while on loan at Oxford City last season after putting the taker off by pointing which way he was going to go.

Ingram said: "I saw his run up, he was angling towards that side of the goal. It was a gamble, I pointed to get in his head - 'Am I going that way, am I not going that way?' I put it in his head and dived that way.

"That's the aim, to get in their head hopefully enough for them to not hit the penalty right.

"I've used the pointing tactic and I've used it quite a few times in the youth team when we won the FA Youth Cup. It seems to be working, so why change it?"

He added he needed the help of team mate Marvin McCoy to complete the clearance however with Portsmouth's former Burnham forward Ryan Bird looking odds-on to net from the rebound.

He said: "To be fair it was a fairly comfortable save when I made it but Marv helped me out massively because I pushed the ball out almost straight to the attackers and Marv was alert and got rid of the ball."

Ingram had also looked to make an impact at the other end as Wanderers were awarded a 94th minute corner.

He was sprinting towards the Portsmouth penalty area hoping to grab a last minute equaliser but was some way from his destination when Max Kretzschmar sent over the kick.

It was down to Anthony Stewart to grab the glory and instead Ingram ran towards his team mates to join in the jubilant celebrations without breaking stride.

The 19-year-old said: "It was a great header - I was right behind it because I was running in as well. They took the corner early when I was still outside the box.

"It was a great delivery from Max and a great run and header from Tools [Stewart]. From behind I could see it was in all the way.

"I was waiting for the nod down because I hadn't got to the edge of the box hoping to get a free shot on goal."

Ingram added a point apiece from a draw was a fair result: "We had most of the first half and second half we just couldn't get out. They seemed to boss the second half, so on reflection it was a fair result for both teams. We've got to look forward to the weekend now."
