A HUGE defensive effort in the final stages saw Sir William Borlase’s year nine rugby squad become the first in the history of the school to lift the Bucks County Cup.

They held off Akley Wood 10-7 in the final to write their names forever into the folklore of the school.

It didn’t come easy though.

They spent the final ten minutes of the final with their studs on their own tryline as Akley Wood threw everything at them in a bid to save the game.

However, Sir William Borlase’s held firm to take the glory.

To reach the final they had to overcome a number of established rugby institutions in Bucks, with Royal Latin and High Wycombe RGS both falling in front of them.

However, the bar was raised against Akley Wood and despite dominating possession for the first 40 minutes they couldn’t break their opponents down before half time.

A sin binning didn’t help their cause either, but they finally made the pressure count when Tom Morgan spun a long pass wide to Lucas Emsley, who beat two men in his 25m run to the line.

The conversion went wide though, and moments later Borlase’s looked like they’d pay for failing to build a bigger lead as Akley Wood went in front with a converted try.

But the Marlow school wouldn’t be denied.

They surged back into the Akley Wood 22 and scrum half Finn Duguid spotted a gap down the blindside to squeeze home the match-winning try.
