A SKEET shooter from Bucks has been crowned BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year.

Sixteen-year-old Amber Hill was presented with the gong at the glitzy Sports Personality of the Year Awards ceremony in Leeds on Sunday evening.

She said: “This year has been incredible and I really can’t believe I won this award out of so many amazing athletes that were nominated.”

Hill’s triumph brings the curtain down on a staggering 2013.

In March she became the youngest ever senior World Cup winner when she took gold in Mexico aged just 15, a junior world record duly followed and last month Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge presented her with the SportAid One to Watch award.

Hill, who only took up the sport when she went to the shooting range with her grandad instead of watching her brother play rugby, also ends the year as the number one skeet shooter in GB and fifth in the world.

At the club where she trains, E. J. Churchill Shooting Ground in Lane End, they are rightly proud.

They have been sponsoring her for four years and helped shape her success.

Marketing co-ordinator Amy Martin said: “She’s been shooting here all her life. It’s a great story for her and a great story for us.

“As soon as she started shooting everyone could see how good she was and that she deserved our backing.

“We knew she was in the top three on Sunday and after she won the One to Watch, we thought she might have a chance. It’s an amazing achievement for someone so young.”

Hill’s name is now added to a list of previous winners including Andy Murray, who won it in 2004 and was the landslide winner of the main award on Sunday, Wayne Rooney and Tom Daley.
