Ainsworth: We've got something to build from now

WANDERERS boss Gareth Ainsworth said his team have now got a platform to build off as they head into the busy festive period.

Such is the fickle nature of football results, a run of eight games without a win has become one of three unbeaten as Blues followed up two last gasp draws against Portsmouth and Scunthorpe United by thrashing Northampton Town.

First up are back-to-back home games against Newport County and Fleetwood Town, both sides who are comfortably in the top six, before a New Year’s Day trip to Exeter and another match at Adams Park as AFC Wimbledon arrive in town.

And Ainsworth said if his players can emulate their display in the 4-1 win over Northampton they will be set for a merry Christmas.

He said: “We hopefully now will build on this. The highs and the lows are huge and trying to stay in the middle over the festive period’s going to be important for me.

“They’ll be training hard because we’ve got some tough games – Newport, Fleetwood will be very tough and Exeter and AFC Wimbledon are teams around us we want to be beating. We want to start climbing the table. Improve on last year is still the target – if we keep playing like that, I’m sure we’ll do it.”
