Goal a huge release for Lewis
STUART Lewis said he took out two months' worth of frustration in hitting the shot that resulted in a key goal against Northampton.
The Blues skipper had just had a blazing row with Cobblers striker Roy O'Donovan when the ball landed perfectly at his feet from a Billy Knott pass.
There was only going to be one result as Lewis hit the ball with such ferocity he almost burst the net, before celebrating wildly in front of the travelling Wanderers fans.
It earnt him his first booking in 22 games but Lewis said it was worth it as, with one kick of a ball, he got rid of the pent up anger that had been building up inside him as Blues failed to win for eight matches.
His goal made the score 3-1 and Dean Morgan went on to complete the scoring in an outstanding - and relieving - win for Wanderers.
Lewis said: "It was such a relief. Bill cut a great ball back and I had a little bit of a run-in with a couple of their players and it was all my frustration and anger that I put into my strike. It was one of the most important goals of my career.
"It's been a tough few weeks and months for me on a personal note, but it's character building and it makes you stronger.
"When you're captain and you take that responsibility on, more scrutiny comes on you and it has been a tough few weeks and months. It will only make me stronger. Hopefully on a team note and a personal note we can turn a corner.
"It was enjoyable and a relief. It was a great win that we've needed now for six to eight weeks."
Jo Kuffour opened the scoring after just 14 seconds and Lewis said: "That was Gaz's message, to just attack them. We've had a great week training, we've been really positive and we carried on from there. We started like a house on fire."
And the captain hopes it's the start of better times for Wanderers as they look to end the year on a high.
The 26-year-old said: "When we got in Gaz said, 'That's the start of it now'. We won't rest on our laurels, we've got a massive Christmas period and this is just the start.
"If we can have a good Christmas period there's no reason why we can't creep up the table. We've got two big home games and we want big performances."
