BEACONSFIELD SYCOB haven’t let the rain or three cancelled games slow their momentum this mid-winter.

They have kept training throughout the Christmas and New Year period, and although Southern League Central fixtures against Dunstable, Aylesbury and Barton have all been submerged manager Gary Meakin doesn’t believe the enforced break will hurt his team.

He said: “I didn’t think it would help us at first, being unbeaten and on a run – I didn’t want the break.

“But maybe come the end of the season we’ll be a bit fresher, and the games are adding for other teams in the division.”

Meakin’s players haven’t had their feet up for a fortnight though.

They have kept training during the week and squeezed in a friendly against Holmer Green on Bisham Abbey’s Astroturf last weekend.

Last night they returned to competitive action, beating Godalming 2-0 in the last 16 of the Red Insure Cup, and Meakin is confident home games against Ashford on Saturday and North Greenford United on Monday will both go ahead.

He said: “Our pitch is fine. Don’t ask me how because on Saturday it was under water but we played on it last night and if there was a game tonight we could play on it again.

“I’m hoping both should be on.”

Meanwhile, Tom O’Regan and Kofi Lockhart-Adams scored in the midweek cup win.

Meakin said: “We want to keep progressing. It’s nice to get to a cup final at the end of the season but at the same time the league is our focus and it won’t be the end of the world if we go out.”
