MARK Cueto keeps pushing the finishing line further back for Tom Varndell, in his quest to become the all-time top try scorer in Premiership history.

Varndell looked ready to reel in the World Cup winger this season, but a biceps injury robbed him of three and a half months and while he was recovering the Sale winger made merry, adding six more tries to his tally to push his overall total up to 84.

That is 11 clear of Varndell, who is still third, two behind Steve Hanley.

Varndell said: “Missing that chunk of the season has really set me back and now blooming Mark Cueto has resigned for another year.

“He’s been on fine form, I think he’s scored four or five in the Premiership already.

“For me it’s about getting my form back, which I think is coming back nicely, being consistent for my club and pushing back into the England set up.

“I’ll get as many as I possibly can this season and hopefully before I retire I’ll get that record.”
