WASPS appear to be on the brink of signing a star of New Zealand rugby.

It’s been reported that Alapati Leiua will join the black and golds on a three-year deal.

The 25-year-old wing/centre played every game for the Hurricanes last year after 52 appearances for Wellington before that and his form took him to the cusp of the All Black team last season.

However, he chose to play for Samoa instead and represented the Islanders five times last summer.

If the deal does go ahead, it will confirm the club's ability to again compete with some of the bigger clubs in England for top players.

Recently Wasps have had to cut their strings when it comes to recruitment, but director of rugby Dai Young has said in recent weeks that they have the clout to go after players near the top of the game again.

The news would continue a good few days for Wasps, who beat London Irish at the weekend after announcing that dazzling winger Christian Wade had signed a contract extension.
