ENGLAND international Maryse Haynes proved her calibre again by leading Birmingham to gold in the British Universities Cross-Country Championships.

The former Wycombe High School pupil was first Birmingham athlete home in tenth place as her university took the overall gold medal in Stirling.

Also first for his university was Alex Goodall in the B short course race.

The Loughborough University pupil finished in the mid 30s last year year but broke into the top ten this time, just second adrift of the top five.

Meanwhile, the London Indoor Games for U15 & U17 athletes at Lee Valley proved a hugely successful hunting ground for a large contingent of young Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow AC athletes.

Ellie Bilsland recovered from a first round disqualification in the U17 60m hurdles to produce a scorching second round personal best of 9.23 seconds, while Caroline Spence smashed her personal best in the 800m but a full five seconds to finish third.

In the spints, U15s Tia Richards dropped her best 60m time down to 8.39 seconds, while Ellie Baxter won all three of her races and improved her original 60m best of 8.80 seconds to 8.60 seconds, exactly on the qualifying mark for the National Indoor Championships.

Her winning hat-trick also included a very powerful run over the 200m in a time of 29.24 seconds.

Other WSEH athletes setting new personal bests were Lauren Smith, Nicole Smith, Maisey Woodisse, Rhea Kanakte, Anya Wood, Ele Forsdyke, Matt Price, Fabienne Cuthbert and Abi Hutchby, while Victoria Malmstrom, Beth Canty and Kitty Jones all looked god on debut.

Elsewhere, twins Chris and Steve O’Hara were in action at the Thames Valley Athletics Centre, where Chris finished the 60m in 7.60 seconds and Steve shaved his time from 7.53 seconds to 7.40 seconds.
