STUART Lewis's run of form in front of goal is proof he's becoming a complete midfielder, Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth believes.

Lewis is in the most prolific goalscoring form of his career, with three goals in his last ten games meaning he's the current form player in front of goal.

Ainsworth said the most recent of those, a scorching volley against Fleetwood Town, was proof there's more to Lewis's game than people realise - adding it's down to his skipper's desire to lead by example.

The Blues boss said: "He often gets stick for some of his technical ability and people look at him as just a ball winner, a grafter in midfield. There's more to Stuart Lewis than that. I think he's come on in the last couple of years.

"We've found a new-found passing game in him and some goals now. His strike was fantastic on Tuesday. It was good enough to win any game - I'm just disappointed it didn't win the game.

"There's no secret, he works on his shooting after training. Dobbo [assistant manager Richard Dobson] works on some finishing from the edge of the box in clinics.

"The midfielders seem to be hitting the target from outside the box and Stu's reaped the rewards of his extra training. There's no magical instructions, it's down to practice makes permanent.

"Usually it's the young players at a football club [that stay behind] but when your captain stays behind and starts doing it and starts performing like he has with his goalscoring, it shows it's paying dividends."

And Ainsworth believes there's even more to come from the midfielder, both as a player and as a captain.

He said: "He's learning as a captain, as I am as a manager. It's only the first year of his captaincy and sometimes it's hard to lead a group when you're an emotional guy and it means so much to you, and things go against you.

"I believe in Stuart Lewis. He's a good character to have and I can see him being a captain in years to come - at Wycombe or wherever he is - because he's a leader and wants to win."
