GARETH Ainsworth believes more matches should be scheduled for the start and end of the season to avoid clubs having a fixture backlog due to postponements.

Wanderers have managed to avoid the brunt of the rotten winter weather after having two matches called off, with one of them, against Fleetwood Town, being rescheduled for this week.

But League Two rivals Newport County have had their last six home games postponed due to the weather, while in the Conference Braintree Town have only played one match in 2014.

Ainsworth said the solution is to play a greater number of matches during the warmer months when there's less of a chance of a call-off.

He said: "The FA might have to look at it and maybe chuck a few games in early when the pitches are better, or put a few games on later when they are nicer.

"I feel for teams like Newport. Their ground's on a low lying level and they just can't get a game on, and the longer that goes on the more games they'll have later on in the season, which could cause problems with recovery and injuries and things like that. There are issues that may have to be addressed."

Heavy rain this week has also had an impact on Wanderers' training regime, according to Ainsworth: "It's very sodden out there. The ground's saturated and any rain we are getting is just lying on the surface and it's difficult to train. We are making the best of what we do."

Tomorrow's match at Cheltenham Town is still scheduled to take place, with the pitch playable ahead of expected heavy downpours in Gloucestershire today.

Cheltenham do not have any pitch covers but the Robins have a pump on standby to get rid of any lingering surface water on the Whaddon Road pitch.
