Leese's delight at sharp shooter Roberts' form

Bucks Free Press: Drew Roberts Drew Roberts

DREW Roberts is back to his best in front of goal as Chesham United continue to chase promotion, according to his manager Andy Leese.

He's now the Southern League's top scorer with 26 for the season as his brace gave the Generals a 2-1 home win over improving Frome Town.

After opening the scoring with a first half penalty his header was fumbled into the net as Chesham took full advantage of their opponents finishing with ten men.

Leese said: "Over the years he's hit the target regularly, which is remarkable. Whenever we played against him we admired his finishing and working with him you can see why he scores so many.

"He's finding that momentum he had at the start of the season. His work off the ball is tremendous, to get in the positions he gets into.

"I'm delighted but I can't take anything away from Chris Dillon alongside him. It was an area we identified in pre-season, that we weren't scoring enough in the last few years and we had to focus on keeping it tight defensively."

A fourth win in five leaves United nine points behind long-time leaders Hemel Hempstead and Leese said his men simply had to keep going and hope their neighbours slip up if they're to steal an unlikely championship win.

He said: "Clubs are catching us but we're not giving up on anything. You never know, Hemel could lose two or three in a row and if they do we've got a chance."

Tomorrow's opponents Banbury United were hammered 8-0 at The Meadow a fortnight ago and Leese said: "We'd expect a backlash. They're at home and a different proposition on their own patch. I would think they would have half an eye on a bit of revenge."

Last week's cancelled trip to Burnham has been rearranged for Tuesday March 11, while defender Danny Gordon has left the club.
