CHESHAM Stags coach Rochelle Clark is within touching distance of becoming the most capped player in the history of England Women’s rugby.

She will win her 91st cap against Italy on Sunday, just nine short of the record held by former hooker Amy Garnett.

Clark, who coaches Chesham with England team-mate Kat Merchant, made her England debut in 2003 and has played in all their Six Nations matches this season.

She said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time with England and I want it to go on as long as possible. I’ve had some very good experiences on the way and I’ve made some great friends.

“It’s been wonderful to represent my country.

“[Becoming the most capped player ever] is definitely a goal.

“The first one is to win the World Cup because I want to become a world champion.

“Amy Garnett is a hero of mine too, so if I can get a couple ahead of her that would be fantastic. “The hunger and passion have helped me get this far.

“I’ve also been looked after very well and as the game has become more professional, I’ve had a lot of support.

“Physios have done a great job in patching me up as and when I’ve needed their help and [coach] Graham Smith has developed me into an experienced prop.”

England have lost the last three World Cup finals to New Zealand, with Clark, who first played rugby as a 15-year-old at Beaconsfield, playing in 2006 and 2010.

She will be hoping it’s third time lucky in France in August.
