Wasps wing needs time to prove his international class

Bucks Free Press: Christian Wade Christian Wade

WASPS winger Christian Wade hasn’t had a fair crack of the whip with England yet.

That is the view of Saracens wing Chris Ashton, who kept Wade out of the England side before being deposed during the autumn internationals.

However, it wasn’t Wade who took his place in Stuart Lancaster’s side.

A pulled hamstring cost the Wycombe-born superstar a start at Twickenham against New Zealand and after recovering from that, he sustained an ankle injury that has cost him a place in the Six Nations Championships.

Ashton said: “Christian has not had a really good crack at it yet.

“He’s been unfortunate because he has had a couple of injuries that have cracked him at just the wrong time.

“I’m not quite sure still about him and that is purely down to not being able to see him in an England shirt for long enough for one reason or another.

“He can create something out of nothing at club level. I think that’s why Wasps are struggling a bit this season because when they need to turn to someone who can turn a game, show a bit of magic, they haven’t got it at the moment.

“It will be good to see him get back in and get fit and then it will be interesting to see how he goes at international level.”

Wade finished last season as the joint top Premiership try scorer alongside Wasps team-mate Tom Varndell.

That earned him a place on Engalnd’s summer tour to Argentina, but he only played one Test before being whisked to Australia to join up with the Lions.

Five tries in eight Premiership games continued his prolific form this season before injury cut him down, and in his stead Jonny May and Jack Nowell have grabbed their opportunities in Stuart Lancaster’s side.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young admitted Wade is still touch and go to tour with England this summer, meaning time is running out for him to claim an England shirt before the 2015 World Cup.

Ashton said: “Jack and Jonny have been going well for their clubs and with Christian and Marland [Yarde] injured or just coming back there just isn’t that much cover on the wings.

“I don’t think there is any winger in England that is head and shoulders above the rest.

“A lot of the lads in the team will be the first pick at the moment but wing at the minute I don’t think there is anyone clears at the top.”
