WANDERERS boss Gareth Ainsworth was pleased at the way his side responded to Saturday's defeat by York as Blues picked up a point against Cheltenham last night.

Ainsworth's men had looked on course for a third successive loss without scoring as they fell behind in the second half at the Abbey Business Stadium before Dean Morgan's penalty secured a share of the spoils.

It was a vast improvement from Wanderers, who had been completely outplayed by York at the weekend.

And Ainsworth was pleased at the way his side came back into the game despite falling behind.

He said: "The performance was there tonight. We went 1-0 down - do we deserve it? Maybe - we've let a sloppy goal in but the way we responded was fantastic. The boys really dug deep. You've got players running on empty for the last 20 minutes. They know what it means to us, they know what it means to the fans.

"I have had a pop at the boys at half time and said, we can lift this, we can win this - this is here for the taking. They've responded well."

The recalled Steven Craig had an early strike ruled out, Max Kretzschmar had a close range effort saved and Craig hit the post before Cheltenham broke away to take the lead through Byron Harrison.

Ainsworth said: "We had one disallowed, which I'm still not sure what for. There was Max's chance, Stevie Craig should really score, then a sloppy goal. We knew the strengths of the full backs, we talked about it before the game so to let one in like that from a cheap cross is disappointing.

"They deserved their goal but we had the better chances tonight."

But he said the key thing to last night's performance was improving on a shocking first half at York, which led to Ainsworth saying he didn't recognise the work ethic of some of his players.

The Blues boss said: "We were out the game by half time. That was the disappointing thing. Second half we were back in it, could have scored, and we carried it on tonight. We've gone down and come back and that's the big thing. That's the important thing, to prove we can do that. Not many teams come here, go 1-0 down and come back into the game."

He added: "I said in nine game you've had two losses and we've had one bad half. We've got nine games left - if we only lose two of them then we'll stay up by a country mile."
