CHESHAM United are still fighting for the Southern Premier League title but they have warned their promotion rivals that if they must settle for the play-offs they’ll go into them with all guns blazing.

Their 2-1 win over Redditch United last Saturday thanks to Drew Roberts’ 38th and 39th goals of the season made it 11 wins in a row for Andy Leese’s men.

But Hemel Hempstead keep winning too and the gap is still nine points with games fast running out.

Chesham have one more to play and also take on the leaders over Easter, but Leese admits Hemel are nearly there.

He said: “As well as we’re doing, we’re running out of games. It’s frustrating and we’ll come to a point in two or three games when it could all be over.”

But if that happens, Leese insists it won’t burst the bubble in the Chesham dressing room.

He said: “The players are level-headed and know the situation. They’re prepared for it.

“We still believe we can win the league but if not our next objective is securing second and a home play-off semi-final. Another two or three wins would just about do it.”

Having put together such a fabulous run though, the play-offs could be seen as a consolation prize.

Leese insists his team would be better prepared than ever though.

He said: “In previous seasons we’ve stumbled in. Last season we got in with an incredible run but there is no doubt that it took it out of us physically.

“This time we’d be able to prepare better. I remember when we went up through the play-offs a few years ago, we got in nice and early and were able to prepare and plan for it.

“Mentally, we’d be ready for it. There is a good feeling in the dressing room and a good look about us as well.”

Chesham host St Neots Town on Saturday while Hemel are at home to St Albans City.
