BNU beaten at the death in varsity sports day
BUCKS New Uni were narrowly beaten 11-10 in their annual varsity sports match against Roehampton.
More than 1,000 players and spectators were involved in the day, which included 21 matches in nine different sports played at the BNU campus, Marlow RFC and Bisham Abbey.
BNU won the men’s badminton, women’s tennis, men’s rugby, men’s hockey and three out of six men’s football matches.
Four other fixtures were drawn meaning it all came down to the women’s basketball match, the penultimate fixture of the day, and Roehampton won it 53-15 to take overall victory.
Matt Gilbert, vice president student involvement at BNU’s Students’ Union, said: “The day was played in a competitive but friendly way and the rivalry looks set to grow over the coming years.
“We look forward to working hard over the next year to ensure that we bring the trophy to Bucks New University.”
BNU footballer Baboucarr Jarra was awarded the Sam Woods Shield for most impressive male player after scoring a hat-trick in the headline fixture of the day between the two university’s first teams.
