LUKE Thomas is celebrating what is arguably the result of his life this week after swimming to third in the British Junior Championships in Glasgow.

The 17-year-old was racing in the final of the 400m individual medley at the Commonwealth Games Pool, but he didn’t look out of his depth as he led the breastroke before coming home third in the end.

Thomas was the first Wycombe District Swimming Club member to reach the British Championships, which doubled at the European Junior trials, in years, let along going on to reach the final.

Head coach Kevin Brooks said: “Luke delivered an amazing performance, swimming as a 17-year-old in the 17/18-year category.

“He has shown he can perform under pressure and who knows what the future holds?

“We'll be back next year and Luke will still be swimming in the Junior Category and I expect if he continues swimming at this level, he will be in the running for a place in the Team GB European Junior Team. I can't wait.”

Thomas set up his fabulous result by coming home in a new personal best time in the heats, before finishing in four minutes, 36 seconds in a competitive final.

Brooks said: “It was an amazing evening, with some awesome swimming.

“It has opened our swimmers eyes to what is possible, and we are immensely proud of Luke and his achievements.”
