TOM Varndell returned from three months on the sidelines with a try at Twickenham and then proclaimed - I’m faster than ever.

The winger marked his comeback from a bicep injury with his sixth try in eight appearances at the famous stadium as Wasps beat Gloucester 38-30 in The Stinger.

He said: “It was always a target of mine to get back for this game.

“The physios have worked really hard over the last three and half months to get me back and it’s been frustrating, but I was so happy to get out there again and get the win.”

This is Varndell’s second comeback from the same injury. He first returned just before Christmas but then suffered a reoccurance a month later.

He said: “My arm feels good. I was really happy with it. I took some contact on it and it felt good all game.

“It was good to get through injury free and with no pain, so hopefully now I can end the season on a bit of a high.”

Speed certainly won’t be an issue. Some players lose a yard of pace after a long lay-off but it appears the opposite it true for Varndell.

He said: “I’ve had a lot of time off to work on my speed. I’ve done a lot of lower body stablity, Pilates, yoga...

“I’m as fresh as I’ve felt, but if you have six months out you get to work on stuff you wouldn’t do usually.

“And I do more work on my speed now than when I was at Leicester anyway.

“We do a lot of sprint training and a lot of work on technique and only last week I clocked my fastest time in training, 37kmph.

“I’m just as quick and now it’s just about maintaining it and looking after myself.”

Varndell flying down the wing again can only be good news for Wasps as they prepare for the final weeks of the season with so much still at stake.

They could end their silverware drought in the Amlin Challenge Cup while a place at Europe’s top table next season is also within their grasp.

Varndell said: “I can’t wait for the semi-finals now. It’s a massive game for the club. We want to be in Europe and this is just another stepping stone.

“It’s all about momentum and winning every single game we play now.

“Bath are a massive challenge and have been in fantastic form, but they’ve got to come to us.

“We’re on a bit of a high and we’ll the confidence from Twickenham and hopefully push on for the rest of the season.”
