AMATEUR footballer Nathan Evans will sign a one-year deal with Wycombe Wanderers.

The 19-year-old winger will put pen to paper in the summer after beating more than 5,700 entrants to win the Samsung Win A Pro Contract contest.

Evans, from Middlesbrough, made it through a series of regional trials and assessment days, before impressing Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth at an 11-a-side final at Leyton Orient’s Matchroom Stadium on March 2.

The Whitby Town wide-man joined up with Wanderers for a trial and did enough to convince the Chairboys chief that he had the talent to turn pro.

He said: “It feels great to have won. I always believed I could win. If you don’t believe you can win then there’s no point in entering the competition.

“This is the first step on the ladder for me, but I’m not the finished article yet. I’ve got a long way to go and there’s a lot to improve on.”

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said he was impressed with Evans’ “fantastic technical ability” and believes it could be the start of a promising career.

He added: “He looked comfortable within the squad environment, which can be daunting for any new player, never mind a 19-year-old on trial.

“I’m now looking forward to working with him. He’s taken this chance with both hands and hopefully this is only the start for Nathan.”

Evans’ journey through the competition will be featured in a three-part Sky Sports documentary later in the year.

It will also feature two other youngsters - Jake Burgess and Josue Antonio - who snapped up contracts at Orient and Swindon Town respectively.

Wanderers face a do-or-die trip to already relegated Torquay United tomorrow, with the Blues’ Football League status hanging in the balance.
