Wood never doubted Blues' survival hopes
GOALSCORER Sam Wood said he never doubted Wanderers' ability to pull off the great escape.
The squad were on their knees last week as defeat by Bristol Rovers sent Blues into the relegation zone for the first time all season and seemingly destined for non-league football.
But Wood refused to believe Wanderers were down and out - and he was proved right as Rovers slipped up at home to Mansfield and slipped through the trapdoor instead.
He said: "It was very disappointing last week after going into the relegation places and it was out of our hands. I said, 'We are not down yet'. All week we've been working on things and being positive. We had a belief that something would happen."
Wood led the Wanderers charge, scoring after five minutes and letting the nervous murmurs of discontent grow around the Memorial Stadium as Rovers fans knew straight away their side couldn't afford any slip ups.
He said: "It was our game plan to try and get an early goal and let the news fill through to the other games and put pressure on them.
"There were always going to be ups and downs throughout the 90 minutes with our game and the other games.
"We had to do a job and it's all come good."
