MARLOW Wolves Youth lost a two-year unbeaten record but regrouped to reclaim pole position in the race for the BritBowl.

The all-conquering youth team were shock 45-39 losers to London Warriors and although they responded by beating London Blitz 65-0 in their next game they ended the day with another reverse, this time a 25-19 loss to Horsham.

Coach Sam McKee said: “I asked the team afterwards to put their hands up if they’d never lost before today and seven hands went up.

“There were tears and all sorts. We just weren’t able to handle adversity and it was a bit of a shock.”

That result left three teams level at the top, but Wolves reasserted themselves a week later with three wins out of three.

Revenge was exacted on Horsham and Warriors with identical 33-12 wins, either side of a 41-12 triumph over Blitz.

McKee said: “Everything that went wrong before went right. It was a fantastic response from great leaders in the team.

“It’s still precarious at the top though and we probably need to win three more games to qualify.”

The Cadets had no such trouble though, with six wins from six leaving them top of the pile and already through to the BritBowl.

They came from 6-0 down at half time to beat London Blitz 20-13 and then Sir William Borlase’s pupil Owen Barrett scored five touchdowns in a 36-6 win over London Warriors.

A week later Blitz were beaten 20-6 before they continued their perfect record with a 27-6 victory over Warriors, with Great Marlow’s Seb Hertzog scoring five touchdowns on the day.

Wolves are next in action on July 12 at London Warriors.
