THOMAS Sansome was one the stars of the show for Wycombe District Swimming Club as he raced to two bronze medals at the South East Regional Championships at the K2 pool in Crawley.

He proved his strength with podiums in the 100m and 200m butterfly.

But he wasn’t the only one to show his form over the two weekends of competition.

Cameron Brooker set the standard on the first day as he smashed his personal best in the boys 1,500m.

He came home in 18.57, which was more than 30 seconds under his previous best time and 15 seconds within the national qualifying time.

Ellie Meadows, competing in her first ever regionals, then followed suit in the 800m freestyle.

She swam it in 10:02.93 minutes, which was just 0.9 seconds outside the national qualifying time .

However, it was good enough to secure her an open water national qualifying time.

Wycombe then finished the weekend strongly in the 100m backstroke, where Andrew Au, Millie Sansome and Cameron all reached their finals.

Au just missed out on a medal as he raced to fourth place, with Brooker and Sansome both coming home in eighth.

The good form continued into the second weekend when the girls team of Sophie Millen, Danni Kidd, Rachel Cox and Millie Sansome finished third to qualify for the nationals as the 18th ranked team.

Jan Poulton and Thomas Sansome then improved their short course records in the 200m individual medleys, while national qualifier Ellie Meadows then set a new long course personal best in the girls’ event.

Sansome then returned to the pool to claim a magnificent bronze in his main event, the year-11 200m butterfly with a time of 2:50.60, which is two seconds faster than his personal best.

On the final day of competition, Joshua Lancaster registered a top 20 finish in the 200m backstroke before Meadows missed the national qualifying standard by a whisker again.

This time she was racing in the 200m freestyle, and after a restrained first 100m she turned on the afterburners is the second part of the race.

But her time of 2:18.50 was just 0.04 seconds outside the national qualifying time.

Thomas Sansome then surged to his second medal of the championships, taking bronze in the 100m butterfly, In other events, George Mann came home fifth in the 200m backstroke and Meadows, making the finals for the first time, and Kidd were sixth and eighth in the 200m freestyle.

Meanwhile, Wycombe District Swimming Club have appointed Oliver Brewer as their third full time coach.

He will become lead coach of the club’s Potential One Squad and lead the programmes of the junior, senior and masters squads.
