WASPS have strengthened their front row options by signing an international prop.

Loosehead prop John Yapp has joined from Cardiff Blues, where he worked with director of rugby Dai Young earlier in his career.

Yapp, 31, has 21 caps for Wales and got experience of the Aviva Premiership last season when he joined London Irish on loan, making 24 appearances.

Yapp will contest a starting role with established props Matt Mullan and Jake Cooper-Wooley.

Young said: “I know John very well from my time with Cardiff Blues and he will add a good level of experience to our front row.

“We now have a good group of props to choose from, who range in experience. We have always sought competition for places and John’s arrival will only make that more intense.”

Yapp said: “I am really pleased to be joining Wasps ahead of the new season.

“I really enjoyed my time in the Aviva Premiership last season and I am looking forward to making a real impact in black and gold this year.”

Meanwhile, Charlie Hayter is going to the Commonwealth Games after signing a contract with England Sevens.

Hayter spent a year at Wasps but impressed Sevens boss Simon Amor in the short-form of the game during the European Grand Prix Series in Lyon last month.

Amor said: “Charlie has always been an excellent athlete, fast and physical, and I was delighted to see him make the step up to the Aviva Premiership with Wasps.

“He is a great addition to the England Sevens programme and I am confident that sevens will also help develop his game should he return to the Premiership at a later date.

“The FIRA tournaments and our intense training schedule ahead of the Commonwealth Games are really helping to embed him within the set up.

“He has been thrown in at the deep end but has all the raw materials to be a great player for us. It is exciting that we are already seeing a sharp upward curve in his performance.”
