HIGH Wycombe’s Aadam Hussain and Jamal Khan won gold and bronze for England at the EIBC European Schoolboy Championships in Hungary last weekend.

Hussain, a year eight pupil at the Highcrest Academy, won the 38.5kg category while Cressex pupil Khan picked up a bronze in the 46kg category.

Hussain’s sharp punching saw him overpower Slovakian Alexander Tankor 3-0 in his preliminary bout, before Irish fighter Brandon McCarthy was beaten 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Hussain was then too good for Peter Yordanov of Bulgaria in the semi-finals, again winning 3-0, before he secured gold with a fine display against home boxer Renato Rostas.

Highcrest principal, Shena Moynihan said: “Aadam takes his boxing very seriously and approaches all his training in an extremely disciplined way so he really deserves his success.

“He aspires to be the best in his chosen sport and is certainly achieving it.

“When I told all the Year 7 and Year 8s of Aadam's triumph during assembly all the students cheered and clapped.”

Meanwhile, Khan won his first preliminary bout 3-0 against Turkish boxer Hasan Gezik with a dominant display in the ring.

Bulgaria’s Yoncho Markov was then dismissed 3-0 in the quarter-finals as Khan warmed to his theme.

But his bid to win a second Wycombe gold came unstuck in the semi-finals, when he was controversially beaten by Barry McReynolds.

Khan’s father Istasar said: “We were aiming for a medal and we got a bronze.

“There were 24 countries competing, 600 fights and I don’t know how many boxers.

“It was way bigger than we expected so we’re happy, he is ranked third in Europe now, but he should have won a silver or gold.

“Jamal beat his Irish opponent three weeks earlier in his home town, but he was too confident this time and they came for revenge with a good game plan.”

Khan trains with Bobby Beck at Repton while Adrian Moco gives him one-to-one sessions in Wycombe.

Moco said: “We’re going to win the world championships next year. We can go all the way and this proves it.”
