SIR William Borlase’s Grammar School is fast becoming a hotbed for rowing talent in the area.

This year alone 11 of their rowers have been selected to represent Great Britain.

Last weekend six of their stars were in Nantes for the annual GB versus France match, while the other five will wear national colours later in the summer.

Setting the standard in France, Ellen Roberts and Katie Bruce added to their National Schools title by winning the girls pair event, while four J16 boys were selected in the eights alongside four rowers from Eton.

Angus Bolton, Ollie Lewis, Alex Spicer and Joel Watson were beaten by 0.39 seconds, but GB won the event overall 11-4.

The international action doesn’t end there for Sir William Borlase’s though.

Megan Barry, Georgia Mulraine and Rufus Biggs, all 17, will represent GB at the Coupe de la Jeunesse European Rowing Championships in France, while Chris Lawrie and Fraser Russell will represent GB at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Hamburg in August.

For Lawrie, the Junior Championships will be his final preparations for the Youth Olympics in Nanjin, China.

He is the only male UK rower selected for the Games.

Director of Rowing at Sir William Borlase’s said: “A total of 11 Borlase rowers have been selected by GB Rowing this year, the most we have ever had.

“It is a fantastic experience for all our rowers and of course, a great honour to represent your country doing a sport you love.”

Meanwhile, Great Marlow School rowers Ross Honey and Edward Nunn also represented Great Britain against France in Nantes last weekend.
