TYRRELL Hatton’s eagled his final hole at the 143rd Open Championship but it wasn’t enough as he and former world number one Luke Donald both failed to feature at Hoylake at the weekend.

Hatton missed the cut by eight shots after rounds of 75 and 78 while Donald finished on plus four, 21 shots behind winner Rory McIlroy after rounds of 73, 73, 71 and 75.

Donald now needs to find his form quickly to force his way into Paul McGinley’s Ryder Cup squad in September, while Hatton’s Open misfortunes continued with a third missed cut in a row.

He failed to make the weekend at St Andrews in 2010 and missed out again at Muirfield in 2013.

The 22-year-old had higher hopes this time around after qualifing with a superb fourth place finish at the Scottish Open the previous weekend, but it wasn’t to be.

He tweeted: “Another short Open Championship for me. Tee to green wasn't good, putter saved me from having an even more embarrassing score. #gutted.”
