GARETH Ainsworth admits there are problems with his new-look squad that need to be ironed out before the start of the new season.

The Blues boss looked on as his side had to withstand a bombardment from Championship side Reading in Saturday’s pre season friendly at Adams Park.

He declared himself pleased with the defensive aspect from his players, but was more alarmed at the lack of creativity and clear efforts on goal going forward.

Reading won 2-0 as Pavel Pogrebnyak and Jake Taylor scored in either half but the scoreline barely reflected the volume of chances the Royals spurned.

That was thanks chiefly to some fine goalkeeping from Matt Ingram and a resolute performance from a Wanderers defence who should be more than capable of dealing with the everyday rigours of League Two football.

It’s going forward where Ainsworth needs to have another look, with strike duo Matt McClure and Paul Hayes all too often left with little in the way of service.

Admittedly they were up against a near full-strength Reading team who just missed out on last season’s play offs, for a chance to play for a place in the Premier League, but Ainsworth said: “There’s a couple of little things that are issues I’m going to have to address.

“We had 14 go, there’s seven new players – we are still getting to know each other.

“They could have had a couple more. We defended well last ditch sometimes. It’s a good workout for us, that was the main thing for us.

“I’m happyish with what I saw today. There are a few issues to address and we’ll be addressing them.

“We’ve got a £9million Russian striker [Pogrebnyak] against us, who scores the first goal. He took it well but I think Aaron was fighting him too much and should focus more on the cross coming in. Little things are great to get out the way in pre season.

“I was happy with the build-up play but we didn’t get enough shots on goals.”

On the positives for his side the Blues boss said: “Tommy Fletcher had his best game for us in pre season and there’s a couple more who opened the eye for me.

“Hayesy had some good touches, some cute things – he’s going to be a big player in League Two. He can open things up.”
