GARETH Ainsworth said there's a chance Josh Scowen could be available to play in the League Two curtain raiser at Newport on Saturday despite being stretchered off at the weekend.

The midfield starlet injured his ankle during the 1-0 win at Barnet and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

But Ainsworth said his physio team are confident the problem isn't as serious as first impressions would suggest.

He said: "He's taken a whack on his ankle and he's got stretchered off. He's got the dreaded boot on.

"Cian [O'Doherty, physio] is quite positive - we'll see. Next Saturday will be debateable but we've got good deputies - we are strong there. We'll see how he is in the week."

The Blues boss was happy to see his side end their pre season campaign on a high by beating Barnet thanks to Peter Murphy's long range strike.

He said: "A win's a win. That's three points next week if that happens and that's what we want to do.

"You always take a win and then work on what you need to work on afterwards.

"I thought Peter Murphy had one of his best games for us so far."

Barnet did have the ball in the net only for the referee to bring play back for an earlier foul and Ainsworth added the Bees had been robbed of a legitimate goal.

He added: "I thought Barnet were good, strong opposition and very direct - pretty much what we'll be encountering from a lot of teams in League Two. I think they'll do well in the Conference."
