MILLWALL manager Ian Holloway admitted to being relieved to see off Wycombe Wanderers - saying extra time would have been "far too much" for his side.

Holloway's men won last night's League Cup tie 1-0 but it was their lower graded opponents who had the better chances.

Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth - who was Holloway's captain when the pair were at QPR together - felt his team did enough to force the extra half hour.

And Holloway said he was glad Millwall won the tie within the 90 minutes after seeing his side face as tough a challenge he's ever had from a lower division team.

He said: "I would have hated it if it had gone to extra time because that would have been far too much for us.

"That's as tough a test I've had from any second division team, ever, so well done to Gareth.

"Well done to our opponents, who I thought were fantastic, valiant, and didn't stop trying all night. They have got a lot more promise this year than they had last year."

Holloway added the encounter had a bit of extra spice to it as Ainsworth's Wanderers survived relegation from the Football League last season at the expense of Bristol Rovers - the side he supported as a boy and went on to make more than 400 appearances for in three spells as a player.

But he said: "It's nice to see Gaz. His team was a mirror image of him - he never didn't challenge, he's a very encouraging man. They all seem really good players as well. It all made for a very, very exciting evening."
