CHESHAM United have four points and six goals to their name after two games of the Southern Premier League.

After their squad was shredded by want away players in the summer, a win at Truro followed by a home draw with title favourites St Neots isn’t bad going.

Manager Andy Leese said: “I don’t mind admitting I’m a little bit surprised. There were one or two positives signs during the back end of pre-season but you’re never quite sure until the real stuff starts.

“One of the questions was would we score enough goals so to have six is nice, but if we want to be serious challengers at the top end of the table there are one or two things we still have to get right.

“We could be sitting here with six points. This time last year we had one point from six so I’m not going to be too critical.

“We need to wait and assess it after seven or ten games.”

Chesham began the new season at 100mph, rattling three goals past Truro on the opening day of the season without reply.

Simon Thomas opened the scoring from the spot after 25 minutes, before Ryan Blake and Mark Nwokeji scored late on to complete an impressive 3-0 win that left Leese’s men top of the table.

They looked set to stay there on Tuesday night as Blake netted a 15-minute hat-trick with goals after 16, 25 and 31 minutes against St Neots.

The bookmakers’ favourites regrouped though after the break to share the spoils.

Leese said: “I actually missed the first half. I was working in Mansfield but I don’t think anyone missed me.

“When I walked into the ground were 3-0 up but in the second half we conspired to concede three times. They scored a speculative second goal and on reflection that was the turning point, but there were lots of reasons.

“In the end it felt like a defeat given the position we were in at half time, but there is no time to dwell on it. It’s relentless and we have to prepare for the next game.”

That comes against Redditch at the weekend, by which time Chesham might have strengthened their squad still further.

Leese said: “There’s one or two players that would like to join us and I’m considering if they’d strengthen us or not. There might be adjustments before Saturday.”
