WANDERERS boss Gareth Ainsworth said the ghost of his side's last match at Adams Park - which led to them being on the verge of relegation - has been laid to rest with the performances at the start of the new campaign.

The last time Blues were on home soil saw one of Adams Park's blackest-ever days, as Bristol Rovers beat them to send them into the Football League's bottom two and needing a miracle to stay up.

Wanderers did manage to pull off the great escape on the final day, but Ainsworth has since said that avoiding relegation wasn't an achievement worth celebrating.

It's been all change over the summer and the Blues manager said the players he brought in during the close season have brought with them a change in attitude, application and effort.

And he said those changes mean fans, players and staff should now be looking forward rather than dwelling on the past.

Ainsworth said after seeing the new-look Wanderers brush Carlisle aside 3-1: "I know what you can get with effort. I wasn't a great player but effort was there in abundance. I think the boys are starting to understand this.

"Some of the players who were here last year have been crying out for these characters to come in and match them with their work rate.

"They'll keep doing that for us. It's a world away from last year but it was nice to put the Bristol Rovers game to bed today."

He added: "There are tired legs out there, which is what I want. I want people to be shattered when they come off that pitch.

"We had a really tough week with the Millwall game. To see a performance like that, the effort is fabulous for me to see."
