BUCKS’ youngest ever cricket team has rescued the summer after they ended the Unicorns Championship with a second successive win.
Bucks hadn’t won a match all season, but a new emphasis on youth has paid off with an unchanged team – average age 22 – backing up their 32-run win over Lincolnshire with an emphatic 125-run triumph over Norfolk this week.
Inserted on a damp track at Tring Park, Bucks made the best of it with High Wycombe opener Alex Morgan (69) sharing a second wicket stand of 170.
They eventually amassed 353 in 84.2 overs, and then rammed home that advantage with Gerrards Cross pace bowler Tom Hampton removing both openers with just three on the board.
Hampton continued to make inroads, ending with figures of 6-79 as Norfolk were all out for 225.
With a lead of 128, Bucks pressed on and another half century from Morgan (53) saw them to a declaration at 199-5.
That left Norfolk 328 for victory, but Chesham spinner Matt Rance didn’t give them a chance with his 6-85, including the first five wickets to fall, ripping the heart out of their chase.
Hampton and High Wycombe’s Jonathan Burden also struck as Norfolk subsided to 202 all out.
