DAI Young was left under-whelmed as Wasps ended their brief pre-season schedule with a patchy ten-point win over Connacht at Adams Park yesterday.

Wasps scored four tries in a 28-18 victory, but the performance was no better than it had been against London Welsh the previous weekend and Young admits his team still needs plenty of work before they kick off in earnest against Saracens at Twickenham in a fortnight’s time.

He said: “We’re pleased with win, but I’ve said to the players that I don’t think that was a step up from last week.

“I thought we were untidy and messy in most of the things we did. Without being disrespectful to Connacht, I always thought we had a bit too much for them but I thought we caused ourselves lots of problems.

“In the first half we had a four on three, three three on twos and two two on ones and because of our handling skills we couldn’t finish off these opportunities. We bombed at least three walk ins so we made it hard for ourselves.

“But if you’re going to do it, now’s the time to do it and get it out of the system.”

Ashley Johnson scored two of the four tries on his return to the side, with James Gaskell and Tom Varndell also crossing.

Young said: ”We asked to be a bit more accurate than last week and I don’t think we achieved that. With performances like that, we’re not going to beat the top four or five teams.

“But we’ve got the next two weeks to work on it and it’s nothing we can’t put right. It’s just basic accuracy.”
