JAMES Gaskell could form one of the Aviva Premiership’s most dynamic English second rows with Joe Launchbury this season, after director of rugby Dai Young confirmed that the 24-year-old was signed from Sale Sharks to play predominantly in the second row.
Gaskell started both Wasps’ warm-up matches and improved on a good first display with a try and the Man of the Match award against Connacht on Saturday.
Young said: “I thought he was outstanding. I thought he did really well and I’m glad he got Man of the Match because I thought he was by far our best player.”
But while Gaskell can play in the back row, Wasps believe his real potential is in the second row.
He said: “We all know he can play number eight, but with international aspirations he feels his best chance is in the second row and I agree with him.
“In the Premiership he’s a quality player in the second row or at eight, but internationally he feels lock is the best route for him.”
