WANDERERS manager Gareth Ainsworth said his team missed the goalscoring expertise of Paul Hayes and Peter Murphy in their Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat by Coventry City last night.

Blues had ten attempts on goal compared to their opponents' three but drew a blank as they were eliminated from the competition at the first hurdle.

Ainsworth made the maximum permitted five changes to his team and opted to give his two top scorers Hayes and Murphy the night off to keep them fresh for Saturday's League Two clash with Bury.

Their sharp shooting was missed, but Ainsworth said that was the only black mark against his side as he praised their performance in a losing cause.

Much of the play was in Coventry's half of the field as the League One side struggled to get to grips with their hosts, but Wanderers failed to take any of the numerous chances they created.

Ainsworth said: "There was only one team in that game tonight. The Coventry staff have been in and reiterated that comment to me.

"I thought we were superb tonight. The only thing was sticking it in the back of the net, which has eluded us. I was really impressed by the performance, which is important to me.

"I really believe it was a one-sided game. We camped out in their half at times. When Matt Ingram got the ball it was like, 'is he still playing?', because it was like that.

"If we'd have got one, we'd have got about five tonight.

"Hayes and Murphy are the ones who've got the goalscoring touch. Tonight they were out - they would have added their little Midas touch.

"The goals will come. If we save them from tonight and score them all on Saturday, I'll be a happy man."

He added: "I'm going home content and going home with a lot to think about for Saturday. Everyone's put themselves in the frame for Saturday, without a doubt."
