SAILORS in Bourne End will be joining thousands more across the globe to take part in a world record attempt.

‘Bart’s Bash’ is aiming to be the largest sailing race in the world and the Upper Thames Sailing Club is hoping for as many boats as possible to sign up to the event.

So far 30 sailors have agreed to take part – among them some of the many new members the club has gained this year, it says, who are keen to make use of their recent training.

The race on Sunday morning on the river Thames will count as one of the Bart’s Bash sailing races, which are running all around the world on the same day in aid of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation charity.

GB Olympian Andrew 'Bart' Simpson tragically died in a training accident in San Francisco bay in 2013 while preparing for the America's Cup competition.

The money raised will be used by the charity to transform the lives of young people through sailing.

The race will start at 11am on Sunday from the UTSC club in Riverside Road, Bourne End.
