SIX Bucks athletes put in a fantastic continental shift to help their team finish third in their first ever European event.

Stephanie Clitheroe, Olivia Caesar, Eloise Davison, Becca Croft, Freya See and joint captain Sophie Street were competing for Windsor, Slough, Eton and Hounslow AC in the European Junior Club Championships in Spain.

WSEH were representing GB after being crowned UK Athletics Development League champions this summer.

But despite their relative inexperience, they highlighted their potential by beating a host of the top clubs in Europe onto the podium.

U20 team manager as WSEH Alan Hewson said: “It was a truly inspiring all-round team effort by the girls, all aged 16 to 19 years.

“They competed against the best young European talent and through sheer determination and hard work realised their goal of a podium position.”

Olivia Caesar symbolised the team’s spirit, winning the 400m and anchoring both relay teams.

Her 400m win came in dramatic fashion. She was well-placed after 200m and with 150m left took the lead for the first time.

A Slovenian athlete went with her and the two were neck and neck down the home straight, but it was Caesar who prevailed by just 0.02 seconds.

Junior world silver medallist Shona Richards backed her up with another win in the 400m hurdles, while Eloise Davison added win number three in the 3,000m.

She was part of a three-girl breakaway and that had become two with 1,000m left.

But as they entered the home straight for the penultimate time Davison kicked again to storm away to a ten second win in a time of 10:23.52.

Croft and Ceasar then played key roles in the silver medal winning 4x400m relay team, with Croft leading off and Caesar bringing the baton home, before Croft added bronze in the 800m in a time of 2:16.27.

Elsewhere, Clitheroe faced a quality field in 100m hurdles but still finished fourth in 14.78 seconds. Earlier she was involved in blanket finish in the 100m where two hundreths of a second separated three athletes with Clitheroe having to accept sixth place. In the reserve 100m race, Freya See set a new personal best of 13.63. She then joined up with Clitheroe and Caesar to come home fifth in the 4x100m.

In the end WSEH finished behind Fenerbace and AK Olympic Brno, but beat Playas de Castillon (Spain), Tampereen (Finland), Athletica Studentesca (Italy), AD Mass Ljubijana (Slovenia) and BTV Aarau (Switzerland) to get on the podium.
