AMERSHAM & Chiltern RFC now know what they can achieve this season after a rampant first half performance that ripped Bury St Edmunds to shreds.

They sliced through their guests to score four tries without reply and take a 28-0 lead down the tunnel.

Injuries disrputed them in the second period as Bury St Edmuds hit back with three tries of their own, but Amersham didn’t panic to see the game out 28-15 to register the second win in three in National League 3 London and SE.

Director of rugby Richie Williams said: “That was the best 40 minute we’ve put together this season.

“The precision and clarity in attack was very pleasing to see and the challenge now, especially in this league, is to sustain that level for longer periods in games.”

The first try was on the board as early as the eighth minute, when captain Tom Grammenos profitted from Tom Blackburn’s break to shrug off two tackles and score next to the posts.

Scrum half Rhys Keith then zipped over for their second score before Jack Kenyon picked his way through a thicket of bodies to dot down try number three.

His own conversion moved the score to 21-0 and the bonus point was secured with try number four right from the restart, when Dave John intercepted to run home unopposed.

Injuries and enforced positional changes broke Amersham’s rhythm after the break and a yellow card for returning prop Stuart Day didn’t help either.

But the home side weathered the storm to get home.

Williams said: “The experienced players are really taking ownership now and changing things on the field, which is encouraging.

“We conceded three tries in the second half but we managed to adjust and even against Tring the previous weekend we weren’t able to do that.”

Amersham now up to third, go to second-from-bottom Westcliffe on Saturday.

Williams said: “We’re trying to be smart and break the season down into three and four game blocks.

“We had a points total in mind from the first four games and if we can pick up something this weekend we’ll be on course.”
