DAI Young admits he doesn’t know his best team at Wasps yet this season.

A raft of summer signings has upped the quality within the squad and after four games the competition for places has become obvious.

Already the number of ever-presents is down to just five, with Elliot Daly, Andy Goode, Joe Simpson, James Haskell and Matt Mullan the only players to be named in each of Young’s starting XVs.

Nathan Hughes, Lorenzo Cittadini and Christian Wade took their turns on the bench last week while Joe Launchbury and Chris Bell were rested completely.

Young said: “Joe Launchbury puts his body on the line every time he plays. He only has five or six games in him, that’s not a criticism, that’s just a fact of the way he plays.

“So we’ve got to be in a position where we can rest players and our performances don’t dip. It makes my job easier if people come in and put their hands up.

“It forces the standard up across the board and we’ve seen that with the wingers. We haven’t had a bad performance from any winger this season so it makes selection quite difficult.

“But they’re the headaches you want, players going out there and playing to the best of their ability and everbody on their toes.

“What is our best team? It’s probably still a work in progress.”
