CHALFONT St Peter’s FA Cup dream goes on this week after they added Kettering to a growing list of cup scalps this season.

They won 1-0 at Southern League Central Division leaders Kettering on Saturday, scoring early and then hanging on to follow up their astounding 8-0 win over MK Dons with another giant-killing act.

Manager Danny Edwards said: “We had a game plan at Kettering and it paid off. We were by far the better team.

“We had chances to kill the game off at 2-0 but didn’t take them, and they threw everything at us in the last ten minutes, as you’d expect.

“But we got the result and are on a decent run. It’s nice to go through September with six wins and three draws. I can’t grumble.”

Alan Hedley was their match-winner, slotting home after just six minutes to continue his record of scoring in every round so far this season.

By half time the 696-strong crowd had been largely silenced and although the home team came out early for the second half and raised the tempo after the break, they weren’t ever able to dominate Saints.

Their best chance came in injury time, when Brett Solkhon thought he’s snatched a late equaliser only for Chalfont keeper Mike McEntegart to scramble the ball off the line.

Saints’ reward is a trip to Evesham on October 11.

Evesham are 15th in Division One South & West, without a home win to their name this season.

They battled past Premier Division strugglers Histon 3-1 on Wednesday night after the sides drew 0-0 on Saturday.

Edwards said: “We’ve put together a decent side and we need to crack on now.

“If we win the next round that would be the furthest we’ve ever gone in the competition and it would be nice to make a bit of history in The FA Cup.

“We certainly look on it as a winnable game, but I’m sure they’re probably looking at us thinking the same thing.”

The small matter of £7,500 is also at stake for the winners, a long with the prospect of a glamour draw in the fourth qualifying round, when the Conference League sides enter the competition.

Edwards said: “In the old days it used to be about getting to the first round proper.

“But now if you get through to the fourth qualifying round you’ve got teams like Bristol Rovers, Torquay, Wrexham...

“There are some really big teams in The Conference League and this is a really good opportunity to play someone like that and have a really good day out. Then you never know.”

Before then though, Saints have two league games to cram in and despite The FA Cup magic dust, Edwards insists Saturday’s trip to St Ives Town and Tuesday’s home game with Potters Bar Town matter more than what happens a week on Saturday.
