WYCOMBE High School's swimming team will be taking to the water at the pool used at the London Olympic Games after winning their regional heat.

They qualified for the National Schools Relay Finals after a phenomenal performance in winning the South East Divisional School Relay Championships in Watford on Friday.

Three new Championship records were set by the Wycombe girls, who will now take part in the grand final at the London Aquatic Centre - which was specially built for the 2012 Games.

The Intermediate team, consisting of Rachel Cox, Kate Lees, Lucy Wheeler, Millie Sansome and Harriet Pugh, dominated the Divisional races by winning the medley and freestyle relays and broke the Championship records in both.

The Senior team, made up of Isabelle Baxter, Bethany Hirst, Lara Reed, Sophie Millen and Christy Sadler, won silver in the senior medley relay and won the senior freestyle relay, breaking the Championship record in the process.

The Junior team of Maia Gehrmann, Phebe Haynes-Shariff, Madeline Turner, Naveesha Karunanayaka, Tina MacAulay and Annie Weddell did themselves proud by coming sixth in the freestyle relay - enough to qualify them for the finals - and 12th in the medley.

Tasha Saint-Smith, Director of Sport at Wycombe High School, said: "They are an immensely talented group of individuals who work tirelessly with their coaches at Wycombe District Swimming Club. We are all immensely proud and very much looking forward to the finals. Not many students can say they are going to compete in the Olympic pool.

"It is the first time that the team have entered the competition in many years and could not have asked for a better outcome."

Sharon Cromie, headteacher of Wycombe High School, said: "It is great to see such success in our school and we are delighted to support the swimmers. We recognise the role that Wycombe District Swimming Club and others have had in their success. We wish them the very best of luck in the finals."

The Wycombe team fended off competition from 36 other schools to book their place in the final, which takes place on Saturday, November 22 from 9.30am-5pm.
