CHRIS Lawrie followed up his SportsAid One to Watch nomination last week by being awarded the Sir Steve Redgrave Bursary at the Wycombe District Sports Awards last week.

The Marlow rower was selected after finishing fourth in his first Youth Olympics while also winning silver at the Junior World Championships and gold at the International Junior Regatta.

He was just one of a host of winners at Court Garden House, Marlow.

Runners up to Lawrie were Matthew Croyle, Maryse Haynes, Georgia Keys and Fraser Russell, while Georgina Whitaker and Ben Smith were also recognised.

The other big winner on the night was Wycombe District Swimming Club, which has been going from strength to strength under Kevin Brooks and is currently on course for their best set of National Arena results.

Meanwhile, Handy Cross runners coach Mike Hickman was named Community Coach of the Year.

Cllr Ian McEnnis, Wycombe District Council’s vice chairman, said: “We know how many hours of hard work go into making sporting opportunities and achievements in our district great.

“It’s for this reason that the sports awards not only acknowledge our young athletes and their achievements, but also pay tribute to volunteers, coaches, clubs and the projects that have inspired local people to take up or return to sport.”
