CHALFONT St Peter pushed Chesham all the way on Tuesday night, but Danny Edwards says the league matters more after 12 points from 12 has moved his team to the brink of the play-offs.

A patched up side went out of the Red Insure Cup on penalties to Chesham on Tuesday night.

But Edwards changed his entire team for the match, with the players that have put together such a fine run all rested ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Northwood.

Edwards said: “We didn’t play anyone who has played in the last three or four league games.

“We’ve got a big enough squad and with no reserve team sometimes it’s difficult to keep everyone happy.

“The happiness of the squad is sometimes more important than the results of some cup games and we’ve prioritised Northwood.

“Winning four on the bounce means you are looking at the play-offs rather than relegation, and we’ll only get stronger as the season goes on.”

Not only have Saints been winning, but they’ve been scoring freely.

Saturday’s 4-1 win over Egham made it 15 goals in their last four league games, and they did it without top-scorer Alan Hedley.

Remmel Clarke (2), Louis Stead and Adam Louth did the damage instead, keeping the side in the groove ahead of a key week.

After Northwood, Saints host Royston next Tuesday before going to Kettering on Saturday.

Edwards said: “Northwood is the start of a really big week for us.

“We’ve got Royston and Kettering, who are the standout teams this season.

“I think they’ll finish first and second, so it will be a good benchmark for us.”
