ANDY Leese said his Chesham United side finally got the result their displays have warranted as they ended a run of four draws with a 3-0 win over in-form Hereford United.

The Generals extended their unbeaten run in the Southern Premier League to 12 matches thanks to last night's win, but a succession of draws has held back their progress up the table.

Leese said his side have been playing well despite dropping points, and although Tuesday's scoreline suggested a comfortable win he said the performance was no better or worse than what's preceded it.

He said: "A few people said it was the best we've played this season but I think we've played like that in a number of games this season but haven't had the outcome we expected.

"It wasn't an easy game at all. Hereford were a very lively side - they train every day so they have that advantage.

"The first half was fairly even and I thought we handled them well. We changed the shape a little bit second half and were able to get in behind them.

"We were able to build a decent lead and defend it well. We've played well in the four drawn games - perhaps there was a little bit more desire to see the game out and take fewer risks."

The victory came against a Hereford side who had won their previous six matches, and Leese was pleased his men didn't let the concession of an injury time equaliser at Chippenham in Saturday's 1-1 draw affect them as they bounced back.

He said: "It was a physical game with both sides going at it hammer and tongs, and I was pleased we responded physically and mentally on Tuesday.

"Their keeper was inspired and made three or four great saves. I thought we were there but just didn't deal with a high ball in the box [for the equaliser]."

Leese hopes the Hereford win can provide a platform for another late play off push - something that has become a tradition at The Meadow in recent years.

He said: "In previous seasons we've come from a long way behind. We haven't lost in the league since early September and that's passed people by. We're only five or six points off the top five, and the way we worked in pre season will stand us in good stead."

United go to Dunstable Town on Saturday and will line up against a familiar face in Inih Effiong, who was allowed to depart The Meadow last week.

Leese is looking to bring in new players to bolster his squad - particularly at the back, with skipper Darren Purse out for three matches after being sent off on Saturday.

Purse and Chippenham captain Matt Coupe were both dismissed on the hour for an off the ball clash at a corner, but Leese said it was a fuss about nothing.

He said: "If that was violent conduct, we all need to go home and take up something else on a Saturday. It was a bit of pushing and shoving between two grown men - that wasn't violent conduct where I come from.

"I understand the rules have to be applied but they don't have to be strictly applied. I wish people would apply a bit of common sense. Chippenham's captain is missing for three games, and my captain's missing for three games."
